San Marzano Tomatoes
The San Marzano tomato is the most famous plum tomato from Italy because of its sweet flavor and low acidity. They are coveted for their firm pulp, easy to remove skin and low seed count. The first seed of this tomato came in 1770 as a gift from the Viceroyalty of Peru to the Kingdom of Naples. San Marzanos are considered to be the best canned tomatoes in the world, the crème de la crème, the gold standard by which all others must be judged. While regular round tomatoes usually have 4-5 seed pockets, plum tomatoes have only 2.
Versailles Farm grows the coveted San Marzano tomato using the best open-air organic methods available. We grow our tomatoes alongside marigolds to repel pests. We grow in red plastic mulch to reflect the red spectrum of light upwards and we drip feed our fruits twice a day for plumpness and flavor. We sourced our seeds from Sarno Italy and grew them to maturity in Greenwich.
So do you think the Italians who love their tomatoes are going to send their best fruit, in a can, to America? We don't think so. Versailles Farm San Marzano tomatoes are handpicked at their peak to capture the bright flavor of summer. The flavor is balanced, sweet and unforgettable.
Summer Stand is open Saturday & Sunday, 9am - 7pm.
