Purpose The goal is to introduce the intern with all aspects of the French intensive method, graduate from each level and qualify for university-level studies. This is a springboard to launch a career or start a business. The goal is to learn physical work skills and modern agricultural techniques. The applicant will acquire practical experience with a broad array of high quality crops. Knowledge will be acquired in the field and with the customer. Farm’s manager will provide daily feedback, guidance, and training. The intern begins by assisting the manager.

Responsibilities Interns will acquire the skills of: direct seeding, plug transplanting, plant cultivation, crop health, irrigation & fertilization systems, harvesting, crop processing, crop sale & delivery, succession planting, bed & soil maintenance, production tracking, record keeping, customer relations and nutritional literacy. The applicant will learn practical techniques working with a wide range of high quality greens, flowers, vegetables, honey, ginger and mushrooms. Applicants must be committed to six weeks of hard physical and mental work. The growing season is approached as a team sport. It’s an athletic event where collaboration, hustle and grit are practiced for commercial benefit. The applicant begins the internship after a paid one week try-out.

Opportunity Interns will receive farming knowledge, compensation, and valuable relationships with a marketplace where demand often exceeds supply. Interns who complete each 6 week level, who stay for the duration, receive a bonus and graduate with the title of Level I, II or III Grower. This title as well as our reference is a reputational asset that will greatly assist you with future career plans.

Background Located in the backcountry of Greenwich Connecticut we’re blessed with beautiful soil and close proximity to several lucrative markets. We operate in harmony with the land to grow food for our community. We grow for flavor, nutrition and good digestion. Our operation is labor-intensive. We sell directly to restaurants, caterers, country clubs as well as an on-site farm stand.

Specification The internship program begins on May 1st and ends on October 15th . The program has 3 periods. Level I occurs May 1st to June 19th. Level II occurs June 20th to August 15th. Level III from August 1st to October 15th. Interns must be 16 or older. The intern is an hourly worker who is paid minimum wage and is eligible for a discretionary end-of-season bonus. Normally hours are 9am – 5pm with breaks in between. However the applicant should expect to work on a moment’s notice from 7am to 7pm for several days during peak production periods. Interns are allowed excusable absences after permission is given. Two no-shows will result in discharge. The applicant must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, have a valid driver’s license, bring their own lunch, adapt to adversity, accept direction from peers, comply with our dress code and work in extreme weather conditions. Preference is given to interns returning from prior growing seasons as well as local applicants.

Farm’s manager will provide daily feedback, guidance, and mentorship. The farm manager begins by assisting the manager. After that you transition into full responsibility for the business.

Responsibilities The farm manager will perform the skills of: bed preparation, direct seeding, plug transplanting, plant cultivation, weeding, pest management, crop health, irrigation & fertigation, harvesting, crop processing, crop sale & delivery, succession planting, bed & soil maintenance, production tracking, record keeping, customer relations and nutritional literacy. The applicant will learn practical techniques working with a wide range of high quality greens, flowers, vegetables, honey, ginger and mushrooms. Applicants must be committed to seven months of hard physical and mental work. The farm manager will also be responsible for managing the crew of young interns. The growing season is approached as a team sport. It’s an athletic event where collaboration, hustle and grit are practiced for commercial benefit.

Opportunity The farm manager will receive housing in a modern on-site apartment. Compensation will depend on your experience or ability. The farm manager will acquire specialized knowledge, compensation, and valuable relationships with a marketplace where demand often exceeds supply. The farm manager who commits to 3 growing seasons can save enough money to start their own operation with a built-in customer list. End of year bonuses are awarded at the discretion of the manager.
